'Disaster Management' - A new challenge for BVG
Natural calamities and disasters like earthquakes lead to mass destruction of life and property. India has experienced some of the world’s most devastating earthquakes. More than 10,000 died in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra in 1993 earthquake. The Gujarat earthquake in January 2001 had a death toll of over 20,000 people. Government estimates place direct economic losses from this disaster at $ 1.3 billion. One can never be equipped enough to combat the widespread disaster earthquakes cause.
But it is prudent and imperative to take necessary precautions. It has been BVG’s constant endeavor to align its economic and social objectives. In line with this, BVG is planning to undertake projects for retro-fitment of structures against earthquakes. Retro-fitting is strengthening to enable it to take more loads and withstand the tremors during an earthquake. All those structures, which have been built using old norms, will have to be retrofitted to confirm to the newly proposed norms. The government of India has setup a Natural Disaster Cell to monitor this aspect. |
